Abstract The present study aims to investigate the sense of social status as experienced by housewives in Yazd. It examines how women’s understanding of social status is shaped by the distribution of resources within the family sphere and by their levels of economic, cultural, and social capital. Thirteen participants were selected through a snowball sampling technique from among housewives with children, aged 26 to 40, residing in Yazd. Data were collected through in-depth interviews, coded using MAXQDA software, and analyzed through Colaizzi’s method, resulting in six major categories and sixteen subcategor The findings reveal that the participants’ economic capital is not at a desirable level, whereas their cultural capital has been strengthened primarily by intrinsic motivations rather than by social incentives. Their social capital, influenced by their role positions, is accompanied by expressions of loneliness and, in some cases, depression. Symbolic capital is shaped by factors such as role ambiguity and the nature of unpaid domestic labor. The results suggest a significant gap between the idealized social status of housewives as reflected in Islamic teachings and the prevailing social reality. Islamic teachings, grounded in ethical and justice-oriented principles, elevate housework from a mere obligation to a conscious and value-laden practice, both materially and spiritually. Social, cultural, and economic policymaking informed by an Islamic perspective can contribute to enhancing the social status of housewives and strengthening the family institution.
